Tim has a new book out called  The Talent Fix  where he talks about recruiting and hiring strategies that work for everyone. I recently listened to Tim present a webinar for SHRM about  7 Strategies for Finding Talent in an Ultra-Low Unemployment Environment. Its not often I get to hear Tim speak because when were at conferences or events, we all have our own sessions and speaking obligations. Your ATS Is Your Most Under-Utilized  Recruiting Resource Tim walks listeners through where to prioritize their recruiting efforts, as recruiting is multi-faceted and has so many moving parts. Tim says your ATS is the first place you should be spending your valuable time. Tap into your existing candidate database, update that information, and talk to candidates who have already expressed interest in working for your company. Tim calls this candidate rediscovery and says that technologies exist in the market that can help refresh and update your existing candidate data. Outside of your ATS, Tim says that referrals are another great source that recruiting teams sometimes miss. And its not just having a referral program. Tim suggests spending money with referrals, such as offering more incentives for certain employees to tap into their network and/or using referral technologies to help make it easier for your employees to share job openings. I really loved this perspective from Tim because I do think we  take referrals for granted. Tim has been very transparent about some challenges hes had with Indeed and their technology. He shares with listeners the backstory on Indeed vs. Google for Jobs and why he thinks companies should invest in Google for Jobs as well as SEO for your job postings. While job postings arent dead, they are changing with Googles focus on their HR technology and job posting algorithms. Its important to be aware of these changes and how this marketing is shifting slowly but surely. Tim says this change is a behavior shift in how job candidates are searching and looking for jobs. We rely on search engines to help us find so much information. Its only natural that these tools would also help us find job listings, openings, and positions for us as employees. Tim is a good friend and I’m excited about his book and the expertise and recruiting knowledge he’s sharing. Hes a triple threat. He is a former corporate HR leader who has experience owning a small business and also working as an agency recruiter. What will you be relocating when you move When it comes to job interviews, there are certain questions that are off limits. Not only are they a faux pas, they are against the law. One illegal question is around a persons family status. Employers are not allowed to ask a candidate if they are married. They are also not allowed to ask whether or not the person has children. The reasons behind these rules are simple. Theres room for unequal treatment between those with children and spouses and those without. Honestly, the judgement can go both ways. One employer may prefer someone with no children who is (in theory) able to work long hours. Another employer may prefer someone with children because it (in theory) indicates that the person is stable and unlikely to switch jobs quickly. Someone with a house and kids has to put food on the table, even when theyre unhappy. Most people know these questions arent allowed. But, many employers ask anyway. So, how can an employer manage to ask such an obviously illegal question? Well, its easier than you might think. Very often, they work it into a question about relocation. The question should be, Are you willing to relocate to our city for this opportunity? The answer should be, Yes, I am willing to relocate to your city. The creative version of this question is, When it comes to relocation, what do you need to relocate? Will you be relocating with a spouse and children? Sneaky, right? Phrased in this way, the question almost sounds necessary. But, why? Why does it matter if someone has to relocate their children? It doesnt. Perhaps this may impact when the person is available to relocate. But, if this is a concern, the new question might be, Are you available to relocate by July 15th? This answers the employers question without stepping over the line. Sometimes, an employer will justify this question by saying theyre trying to get to know the candidate better. Maybe they are. But, theres also a possibility that the answer to the question (whatever it is) may create some level of bias against the candidate. This is why this question is not allowed â€" to prevent bias and to keep the playing field level. Whether or not a person has children or a spouse, the most important thing is that they show up on time and that they do a great job. People can succeed or fail at this, regardless of their family status. If youre a hiring manager, take note. Your candidates do notice when you ask illegal questions. Just because they answer them doesnt mean they arent paying attention. If youre a job seeker, youre not alone. These questions are asked more than anyone would like to admit.
